Precipice

Another two months without a post. :/

Well anyways I didn’t get the job, they wanted to hire more locally and for more experience, which I could have told them before the whole process. But all’s well that end’s well, towards the end I wasn’t entirely sure if moving so far away was a good idea but was committed to it if their decision was to hire me. Such a mixture of feelings, I don’t really know what to say except I’m glad it’s over and I have some closure.

This semester’s almost over but because of some things I need at least one more semester before I can get my AS degree. Which is fine. The plan right now is to work on my hobby projects to beef up my resume over the summer, then attend school in the fall, and then start seriously applying for various positions after that. But I know me, and I know I’ll probably cave before then and start applying before then. But I’ve sworn to myself I won’t start until I at least finish my game and version 1.0 of my CouchDB forum software. Which I’m very happy to say that both are progressing awesomely. 4kg is on track to finish in June, and I’m ahead of schedule on 0.5 of Modern Forum. So that’s exciting.

I don’t know what I’ll be doing over the summer. Money would be nice but at this point I feel an interim job at like retail would be a waste of my time. Which is why I’d love to do contract web development work, but 1) I’m not entirely confident in my skills and 2) me and online tasks don’t mix. I signed up for an online class this semester and I just did not do any work for it all. I’m withdrawing from it tomorrow. It’s a character flaw that can be fixed, but why risk it for people who need things done? I wouldn’t want to let them down.

As for non-real life stuff, my TV viewing is ramping up since it trailed off in November. Sunday is Bob’s Burgers, Monday is Stargate Universe (only one ep left, though), Tuesday is Scooby-Doo: Mystery Inc. (hey, give it a chance!), Wednesday is South Park, Thursday is Community (two left for this one), Friday is empty, and Saturday is the absolutely fantastic Doctor Who. It’s great having a little something to look forward to almost every day.

This summer I’m only looking forward to two movies though, X-Men: First Class and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. I have tremendous faith that both will be highly enjoyable.

Google I/O is coming up and it’s going to blow some balls off, I’m sure. I almost very nearly got tickets to go this year (was about the purchase the day they were offered, but they sold out in less than an hour.) I’m kinda mad because Google is increasingly pimping this event to techies in general and not like developers, which was the event’s original focus. On the other hand, because it’s become practically E3 for Google, it’s incredibly hard not to get excited about it. Google is so big and has so many products, they can spend two hours straight just announcing a new feature or something for each one. It’s gonna be great, I’m especially looking forward to Chrome OS and Google TV announcements.

Speaking of E3, that’s coming up too and I’m pretty pumped for it as well. Rumors have been swirling for a few weeks over Nintendo’s next console, codename “Project Café,” which is purported to have a touchscreen built-into the controller. Many have said (some jokingly, some not) that Nintendo is effectively ripping off Sony and it’s PS3/PSP/NGP linkup capability, and some others with better memories have said that Nintendo is actually ripping themselves off with their GameCube/GameBoy Advance linkup. But these comparisons miss a crucial detail: none of that was standardized with each console. The Café way will be superior because every developer can rely on every controller having a screen. The possibilities are exciting, to say nothing of the console’s purported power. Personally, I’d be absolutely thrilled with just a Crystal Chronicles 2 announcement. I think it could work much better with the Café’s setup than it every did by relying on each player having both a GBA and link cable. Plus, online support… mmm… it could be like Phantasy Star and Monster Hunter had a baby. (Note: I’ve had limited involvement with both series so forgive if that analogy doesn’t really work.)

So like last year, this summer seems pretty front-loaded for my excitement. I’m sure the rest will be fine though. There are some major changes happening in the household at the moment, seeing if they work out for the better will be fun to observe.

    I’m sorry to hear that the job offer did not come through, but hey, it’s probably for the best. As exciting and as wonderful of an opportunity that may have seem, it is probably wise for you to focus harder on your schooling and personal improvements over the stress of moving cross country. Just take this as a learning experience for next time.

    Anyway, I’m glad to hear you’re doing alright at least. I wish I could say the same. While I’m not in a bad position, I ended up missing the dead line for applying for the fall semester. It was only by a day or two and CofC said they would still put it into consideration, but have no guarantee’s on an open spot for me. Thing have just been so difficult since my father’s passing regarding finances and legal agreements with property. (My mom wants to sign a car over to me that is in my dad’s name, but he was no legally allowed to sign over property due to the bankruptcy which was also in his name, but now that he’s deceased…. We don’t know what to do about it. Their lawyer is no longer at the firm and she’s been too depressed to get things together.)

    So with the risk of having to put college off for another semester… again… I’ve been trying to be productive. I’ve started learning new things and picking up different hobbies. The other day I learned how to binary. Today, I’m trying to learn more about the haunted history of Charleston to see if there’s any places I can go.

    Those two sound like two pretty different activities. :P I’ll pray you get in. If you don’t, who knows, something else could pop up.
